Seagulls: Get Outta Town!

Seagulls: Get Outta Town!

For a long time now, seagulls have been a major problem in the City Centre and it is getting worse

To help put an end to their evil food stealing, people attacking shenanigans, Elgin BID have brought in a specialist company to help rescue the City Centre from the winged nemesis!

They will use a different technique to discourage the seagulls from nesting – lasers. They use them to disrupt the airspace which discourages the birds from building nests and does not harm them in any way. By discouraging the birds from building nests we will disrupt their nesting patterns.

Seagulls come back to where they were born to lay their own nests, so by taking this action we are helping to break the nesting cycle.

The work will be taking place during the night, so it is not causing disruption to people working or living in the city.

Another reason that the seagulls need to move out of the City Centre is they cause damage to buildings. Their nesting materials can cause blockage to drains and overflow on flat roof buildings. These blockages and overflows then cause water damage to the outside of buildings and into attic spaces. The seagull’s droppings are also a problem as when they build up this can not only cause damage, but they are filled with harmful bacteria.

Moving the seagulls out of the City Centre isn’t just good for us but it is good for them as well. The food they are eating isn’t good for them! If you think about it, if chips, pastry and ice-cream are bad for humans why would they be good for seagulls? To help us move the seagulls on we ask that you do not feed them. As we all know far too well, seagulls can become aggressive to get what they want and protect their young, and this is a SERIOUS issue. When you are finished eating please put any leftovers and rubbish into the bin!

So, remember:

The Elgin Gift Card- The Gift of Choice

The Elgin Gift Card- The Gift of Choice

We’ve all been there, a certain someone’s birthday, a colleague is leaving work, an anniversary or special event, you want to get a gift but have no idea what to get. You might opt for a gift card, but then you have to decide where to get it for.  There is always that fear, that you have spent good money and the person you want to treat, can’t find anything they like.

Problem Solved – That’s where the Elgin Gift Card comes in! The Elgin Gift Card is different from a normal store or gift card as it lets the person who gets the card choose where to spend it. With over 70 businesses (and counting!)  accepting the Elgin Gift Card, they can choose from a meal out, coffee and cake, a beauty treatment, shoes, a holiday, children’s clothes, a new outfit, or they can even get a steak from the butchers – the choice is truly theirs!

By giving the Elgin Gift Card you are not only showing someone how much you care but you are also supporting local businesses.

Buying your Gift Card

To buy your Gift Card you can pop into Sugar Plum on Batchen Street, Scrbbles on the High Street or Gordon & MacPhail on South Street.

You can also buy them online at www.elgingiftcard.co.uk. The website will go live on Friday 8th June. If you buy them online, you have the option to have them delivered to your house or delivered to the recipient’s house. Wouldn’t that be a lovely gift to receive in the mail?

Spending your Gift Card

When you have received your Gift Card the first thing you will want to know is where you can spend it. You can check out the map on the Elgin Gift Card website, it shows all the participating businesses – BUT keep an eye on it as the number will continue to grow! When you are shopping in town you can also look out for the window stickers that show the business accepts the Elgin Gift Card.

Fun things to do in Elgin during the Easter Holidays!

Fun things to do in Elgin during the Easter Holidays!

With the Easter Holidays starting today (where has this year gone?!), you may be wondering how to keep the kids entertained. If you are, look no further as we explore the best activities for kids in Elgin City Centre!

A great way to kick off the Easter Holidays is with our Easter Family Fun Day! Our Easter Family Fun Day is on Saturday 31st March in Elgin City Centre. Come on into the centre of Elgin for a day filled with fun for all the family. There’ll be lots of fun and games for the kids, including Crazy Golf and everyone’s favourite, Bubbles the Clown. Join us to have a go at Aerial Acrobatics and Fitness with Vallen Fitness Studio. The kids can also take part in the Great Elgin Easter Egg Hunt and be in with a chance to win some Easter chocolate!

If you want to be more active with the kids during the holidays, then Cooper Park is a great choice! Cooper park is only a short walk from the Town Centre and has parking nearby. With the large open space the park offers you, you could do any kind of sports, football, a game of frisbee or gather your friends and have a game of rounders. Cooper Park also has a playpark that is great for older kids and a baby park that is perfect for the little ones. It also has a skatepark for more adventurous kids.

While you’re at Cooper Park, why not head over to the Library? You can check out a few books to keep the kids entertained if the good old Scottish weather kicks in!

In case the weather does take a turn for the worse, treat the kids to a new movie at Elgin Cinema. The cinema has three viewing screens so there is sure to be a movie that everyone will want to see. Be sure to check out their Facebook Page for their newest releases and times.

If you are wondering where to take the kids out to eat, why not check out our Food and Drink guide at http://elginfoodanddrink.embraceelgin.co.uk/ . The guide shows you all of the restaurants, cafes and takeaways in Elgin City Centre. You can even filter the guide to only show what food you are craving or have them all showing for some delicious inspiration!

Elgin’s rich history dates back centuries, so why not take a tour through time with the Castle to Cathedral to Cashmere heritage experience! You can travel back through 1000 years of Elgin’s history. Look out for the plaques around the City Centre and scan them with a QR Code reader to find out what happened in Elgin at that point in time. Head over to their website for more details!

Continuing with the Elgin history theme Elgin Museum is another great choice. Although the main museum is not open until 28th April, they are running activities for kids of all ages in their side hall! Your kids can discover the mysteries of Cropmarks on April 5th  from 1pm-3pm. This activity is free and suitable for ages 8-14. Booking is essential so head over to their website for the booking details. On the unlucky Friday 13th, the museum is holding a drop-in session from 1pm-3pm all about superstitions and lucky charms, suitable for ages 5-14. All these sessions at the museum have free entry, so be sure to take the kids down for some great fun!

Be it history, sports or a movie there is loads to keep the kids entertained in Elgin this Easter Holidays!
